I am assisting a couple who just acquired a nightclub. They lack financial expertise, and while I am not an accountant, I have enough knowledge to help them get started. For them, any available tool is better than what they think they can operate. Since I have an analytical background, I could dive into details, but I want to seek recommendations from others for a chart of accounts that is simple enough and not overly granular to guide them in starting to think about where expenses flow. For example, how should bar expenses be broken down? Liquor, glassware, mixers, cocktail garnishes, cleaning supplies, etc. How much detail needs to be paid attention to? The business once reached annual revenue of $1 million, but it has declined significantly. My friends have potential, but before hiring a bookkeeper, they need a simple starting point. This raises another question: what software to use? I have been considering QuickBooks—cheap, simple, and widely known. Does anyone have other suggestions? Thank you.
