Career Path Choice: Controller or FP&A?
A CPA with 4.5 years of Big Four audit experience and internal audit experience at a large listed company has received a Controller position offer from a former client (a mid-sized company planning to go public within the next two quarters). The position offers a significant increase in both salary and rank, but the candidate is concerned that the working hours may affect plans for a second child. Meanwhile, the candidate is also considering a transition to FP&A, but worries about starting over as a senior analyst and has doubts about the nature of forecasting work. The article seeks advice on the working hours, job content, and career satisfaction of both the Controller and FP&A paths.
Dear colleagues, I am facing a critical career decision and sincerely seek your advice. My background is as follows:
- I have 4.5 years of experience in public auditing at a Big Four accounting firm;
- I then moved to a large publicly traded company with a market capitalization of approximately $300 billion, working in the internal audit department.
Recently, I received a job offer from a former client for the position of Controller at their company. The company is a mid-sized private firm planning to initiate the IPO process within the next two quarters.
However, I currently have a 1.5-year-old child and am planning a second pregnancy, so I have concerns about the potential workload intensity of the target position. I have clearly communicated to them that I would find it difficult to sustain working more than 55 hours per week. They responded that the company has sufficient budget to hire external consultants when necessary to assist with special projects (e.g., implementation of ASC 606 revenue recognition standard, drafting of disclosure documents, etc.).
Nevertheless, this opportunity represents a significant leap in both compensation and title for me, making it hard to simply walk away. Overall, I feel frustrated with the high-intensity work patterns prevalent in the accounting industry—even in private companies, work-life balance in a Controller role is often difficult to guarantee.
For these reasons, I am considering a transition to Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A). Its main disadvantage is that I may need to restart at the Senior Analyst level before gradually advancing; also, I have doubts about whether I would genuinely enjoy the nature of the work in that function. My personality tends toward seeking definitive answers, and forecasting and planning work seems to lack a solid foundation (this may stem from my lack of experience in the finance field).
My specific questions are as follows:
- As a Controller at a smaller private company, what are the actual working hours typically like? Is work-life balance achievable? Or, are there other accounting roles (such as Technical Accounting Manager, Financial Reporting Manager) that might offer better balance? As a Controller, what aspects of the position do you like most?
- As an FP&A Senior Analyst or Manager, what are the working hours like? During which periods are you typically busiest? What characteristics of the role do you like most?
I look forward to your insights and suggestions, and I am very grateful.
